Gordon MacDonald welcomes arrival of the Haggis Our
evening began with a warm welcome to our audience, made up of members
of various churches in Penicuik and beyond, by Gordon MacDonald our
Master of
Ceremonies. This was followed by the Selkirk Grace given by our
minister Rev John Urquhart.
The haggis, carried by Mark Wells,
was piped in by Jack Mullins, grandson of St. Mungo's member Joyce Hunter.
After addressing the haggis
Gordon
then asked everyone to raise their glasses in a toast to the haggis.
Jack then piped it out, to be cut up into portions for our meal.
The kitchen team had worked hard to produce our hearty meal which we then enjoyed. Haggis,
bashit neeps and champit tatties was followed by the affectionately
called 'Tipsy Laird' trifle. Biscuits and a wide selection of cheeses,
with tea or coffee completed a magnificent Burns Supper meal.
Toasting the Haggis
Time
for some entertainment, which began with some music to get us
started. Alan, Marion and Val struck up with Alan's own arrangement
of 'My Hearts in the Highlands', which had everyone joining in.
Marion, Val, Alan
Our
minister, Rev John Urquhart delivered 'The Immortal Memory' referring
to which he referred to Hugh MacDiarmid, and considered Burns amongst
the ministers. A story full of historic references, quotes and reports
was both interesting and amusing. Click Immortal Memory to listen to John's tale.
Margaret Black to to the floor to recite 'To a Mountain Daisy', before David Hogg stood to 'Toast the Lassies'.
Agnes Ovenstone took the honours of making the 'Reply for the Lassies' which caused some laughter from our audience.
No Burns Supper is complete without a recital of 'To a Mouse' and this year Janis Hogg took up the honours.
More music to get our feet tapping. First Marion, Val and Alan returned to sing ' Lassie wi the Lint-white Locks', followed by David Hogg taking the floor to sing 'Bonny lass of Ballochmyle'. accompanied by Eileen Marchant on the piano. In an unscripted addition to his repertoire David took us on the Russian poet Pushkin's song 'Meri or Mary'.
Marion Mather then returned to the floor for a solo rendition of 'Star o' Rabbie Burns'.
Our
evening was coming to a close and Gordon Macdonald gave the vote of
thanks to our top table guests, entertainers, the team who prepared our
meal, and most importantly, the members of the audience.
Marion, Val, Alan & Glynis
Returning
to the floor to lead us on the traditional Auld Lang Syne was Alan,
this time accompanied by Marion, Val, and Glynis. We heard from Alan
how the current, and well known version, is relatively new. Reported to
have started in Newcastle it differs from the more romantic style
that Burns wrote. Let Alan tell you.
So first Alan and the group played the original Burns version, before they got us up in a circle, joining hands for the modern version that we all know and love so much.
It was a great evening enjoyed by everyone.
