St.
Mungo's church was filled with music and song on Friday 5th October
when the Caledonian Male Voice Choir from Hamilton sang a wide
selection of popular songs to an all age audience from across Penicuik.
The audience were further entertained with
two solo singers during the performance.
Organised
by Mary Paterson, whose father, Bob Campbell, was a past president of the choir, the
"Caley Choir" as they are often called, opened with a tribute to Mary's
father, before moving into their play selection starting with "Hey look
me over", The rose, and You raise me up". Musical Director Bill
Barr then handed over to Elizabeth Wiper for the first solo
interlude. Elizabeth gave us an opera piece followed by "Christopher
Robin is saying his payers".
Bill
Barr brought back the choir for "Westering Home", "My Love is like a
red red rose", and the "Dashing White Sergeant",before handing over to
Carole McCrudden for a second solo selection. Carole was accompanied by
Campbell Barr, Bill Barr's brother, on the piano and sung a
selection of jazz numbers.
The
choir returned to the
stage to continue with "Bring Him Home", "I dreamed a dream", and "Do
you hear the people sing". Elizabeth Wiper returned to sing the Ivor
Novello number "Waltz of my heart" and a great little number "When the
apples grow on the Lilac Tree".
Gavin Lawson, who has
been 51 years with the "Caley Choir" led the members back to sing "The
song of the Jolly Roger", "When I fall in Love", and "Da Doo Ron Ron"
complete with hand actions for the audience to follow. Carole McCrudden
returned with a another couple of jazz numbers including "Basin
Street Blues".
The final section by the choir included the Christian songs "Bryn Myrddin", "Just a closer walk with thee", "Gwahoddiad"., and the Willie Nelson favourite "Always on my mind".
Agnes Ovenstone gave the vote of thanks to the choir for a wonderful evening before they sang an encore Morte Christe.

concert raised £430 which will go to the Sunday School and the
Organ Restoration Fund for the refurbishment of the swell organ.
