Carols in the Precinct - 21 December 2019

Carol Singers in the Precinct

Carols in the precinct brought the Penicuik churches together members out on a dry if somewhat chilly morning on Saturday 21st December. Some 40 people gathered round to sing a selection of favourite Christmas carols for the shoppers in Penicuik’s precinct.

With titles that included ‘O come all he faithful’, ‘Away in a manger’, The first Nowell’ and some less often heard ‘Set amid the winter’s snow’, and ‘Of the Father’s love begotten’ we brought the spirit of Christmas to the people of Penicuik. With 21 carols in our song sheets  we filled a full hour singing without any repeats.

As visitors paused to listen a present bag  was given, containing a booklet ‘God’s Gift’ relating how we see Christmas today, with presents, feasting, Santa Claus and all the glitter, the expense, and debt this often leads too. It then explains the true ‘mystery of Christmas’. Why God chose a squalid place for Jesus to be born, his life growing into a man and his ministry, based on the gospel of Luke.

In addition to the booklet were details of ‘Heart of the Matter’ Christian radio programmes, and a few toffees and sweets. We handed out a 100 of the bags of ‘presents’, and could have given away more, had we had more.

A wonderful way to bring the true mystery of Christmas to the people of Penicuik, providing a time to see beyond the rush and tumble of shopping, feasting and presents.
