Sunday with Christian Aid  - 14th April

The Sunday evening service on 14th April welcomed Cecilia Cordova to speak to us about her work for Christian Aid in Bolivia. The gathered congregation came from all the churches in Penicuik, North, South, and St. James the Less.

The service was introduced by Sandy Robertson, who only wished his Spanish was as good as Cecilia's English. The music was provided by the Praise Musicians, Andrew Dunsire on guitar and vocals, with daughter Linda on vocals, Stephen Elson on guitar and vocals, and Graham Mcdonald on piano.

We  opened with a short video clip of  'What a Joy (Psalm 146)' by Sarah Emmerson with lyrics so we could join in, (watch it here). Andrew then started the singing with a selection that began with Psalm 134 'Praise the Lord all ye Servants of the Lord', then  Lord Reign in me' by Christian songwriter and worship leader
Brenton Brown (watch it here), finishing the opening sequence with the Matt Redman 'Here is love, vast as the ocean.' which you can watch a version here .

David Hogg led a prayer and after a reading Cecilia took the microphone and told us about her work in Bolivia. Bolivia has a varied range of differing ethnic peoples, four different types who live in the mountains, rising to some 4000 metres, living in temperatures as low as 20 degrees below zero, and and another 30 different groups living on the plains, where it rarely drops below 30 degrees all year round. And we complain about the weather in Penicuik! Through Christian Aid Cecilia is promoting the different ethnic groups working together, recognising  their differences.

Some 70% of Bolivians are poor, and the majority of women in particular have no access to education. Christian Aid are providing teaching and leadership. In the lowlands until about 15 years ago the people were effectively enslaved, working for no pay. With the help of Christian Aid they now have land and can generate a living for their families.

Cecilia told me that when she shows videos and tells the local people of the generosity of people in the UK through Christian Aid week and other fund raising activities, helping them to a better life, they are truly amazed at such kindness being shown to them from such a far of land.

With Christian Aid Week soon to arrive, please remember the joy and enlightenment that your donations will give to God's people in far of lands without which they would be destined to a life of poverty. Speak to Janis Hogg if you need more information.

We finished our evening service with the Noel and Tricia Richards song 'Filled with compassion'  (listen to it here), and the Matt Redman favourite ' Ten Thousand Reasons' which you can listen to here

Over tea and refreshments we heard that Cecilia will spend more time in the UK presenting to congregations, with a visit to the Isle of Man on the places to visit. We thanked her for her visit to us, and wished her well for the future.

Look out for our next praise evening when you can join in great worship music, some old, some new.  An opportunity to 'Sing something New' and enjoy the worship of God.
