Food Facts Friends Christmas Lunch - 19 December

Serving tables with the Christmas meal
The 2019 annual Food Facts Friends Christmas meal, now in its fourth year, attracted some 50 visitors including families, for a traditional Christmas meal on Thursday 19 December.

The tables and chairs were dressed with festive covers and red bows, thanks to Sharon Walker Wheeler, making the place extra special for the visitors.

Penicuik’s town crier ‘Mose’ welcomed everyone to the meal, thanking Asda and JB Foods for donating the food that made up today’s menu. Mark Wells added a welcome on behalf of Food Facts Friends. And to welcome Midlothian Provost Peter Smaill as our special guest.

Opening with the saying of Grace by Rev John Urquhart, we started with a choice of soup. This led on to our main course, traditional roast chicken, stuffing, pigs in blankets, sausages, roast potatoes and vegetables. Plenty to go around and ‘seconds’ were very popular. A selection of soft drinks were available to wash it all down.

We welcomed the Rev John Urquhart back to tell us the Christmas story using a video ‘The well good news of Christmas’ that followed the journey of Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem, the birth of Jesus, and what that means to us today. You can watch the video at

A second video presented the group Casting Crowns singing ‘Make Room’

Provost Peter Smaill then thanked Mark and the team on behalf of Midlothian Council, for the good work they do throughout the year.

Some of our volunteers at the ready
The dessert was served while we watched the video. A choice of traditional Christmas Pud and cream, or a choice of gateaux. What a way to finish off a great meal. But wait. All was not over.

Time for a bit of party entertainment. Town Crier Mose introduced singer Kevin Rae who sang a selection of festive songs that had many a foot tapping and a few singing along. While we were being entertained, tea, coffee and mince pies were available.

We had one more visitor arrive. A ringing bell, a Yo Ho Ho, preceded our visitor dressed in a red suit, with white hair and a long beard. All the children gasped as Santa Claus walked into the room, complete with sack of toys for every child.

The children were called forward by name to receive their gifts, and each thanked Santa. When all the children had received their gifts Santa gave a present to every visitor to the meal, mums and dads, gran, grandads, aunts and uncles.

Mose and Mark Wells led the thanks to all those who had made our day happen, the volunteers who served the tables, Asda & JB Foods for their donations,  the kitchen team for preparing and cooking our meal, Kevin Rae for the entertainment, Provost Peter Smaill, and all the visitors who came to enjoy the meal and celebrations. A great way to end our Christmas meal on a high.

As we departed John had left a selection of pamphlets to take, telling us more about Jesus and what happened after his arrival as the new born king.
We are all God’s children.
