The congregation of St. Mungo's was swelled with the visitors from all the participating churches
to celebrate the end of a week of the
Holiday Club, many with children who had taken part in the past weeks
club. The service celebrated God's kingdom, through the activities ,
song, prayer, and stories from the Holiday Club.
The
celebration service was led by Rev John Urquhart of St. Mungo's and Rev
Graham Astles of the North Church, assisted by members of the Holiday
Club team, wearing red tee shirts. Our Waste Watcher 'Rubbish Team',
Sheila Anderson and Sandra Stewart, dressed appropriately in yellow
hi-viz jackets opened the service calling us to join in the 'Welcome Everybody' song.
The Rev John Urquhart introduced himself and extended the warm welcome to everyone here in this place at this time, before introducing the Rev.Graham Astles
who related a story of a Sunday School young girl who answered 'why we
are supposed to be quiet in church?' Because everyone is sleeping came
the reply! While we are quiet when someone is speaking, we all
make as much noise as we like when we sing. This led nicely into
our song celebrating God's new creation, and how it sometimes went
wrong! Just like we can make our wonderful world into
rubbish! All things Bright and Beautiful.
Sheila Anderson led our opening prayer of thanks with the help of young Emily and Katie, who had written prayers especially for this morning's service.
John returned to describe how god made 'Something out of Nothing',
starting with imagining we were surrounded by nothing, gloomy and dark.
But God is in the middle of this and created light, the sky , the
earth, land and sea, and everything on it. He made us as human
beings, and we can do all sorts of things. God told us how to look
after his world, and He was pleased with His creation.
But
things didn't quite work out like that. Pollution, famine, climate
change are just a few of the problems humans faced. People argue and
fall out with each other and end up messing it all up. But god came
into our world as Jesus and showed us His light in our darkness.
Bill Webster asked young Isla what her Experience of Holiday Club
had been. It was Isla's first time at a Club, and she tells us how she
enjoyed meeting new people the various activities. Bill explained how
volunteers are an essential part of running the Holiday Club. Bill then
talked to Margaret Barry, a volunteer at this years event, and we hear
what was challenging and rewarding in the role.
Sandra Stewart introduced 'The Waste Watchers Song',
the song that was the theme of this years Holiday Club. This led into
our next song that was learned as a memory verse called 'Follow Me'.
The
Rev Graham Astles recalled the other things that went on at Holiday
Club, including a daily Bible Story. He was assisted by volunteer
members to relate today's story. He took up the story of Peter, who was
feeling rubbish, after denying Jesus, leading to the crucifixion. Peter
had let down his best friend. Graham and the group tell us the story of
Peter meeting Jesus, after he had risen again, at the sea of Tiberias
(Sea of Galilee) and being told to cast his net, so catching more fish
than the fisherman could carry.
The story turns to us and how
we feel, good or rubbish? Are we good all the time? Do we doubt what
God tells us to do? Why do we drift into doing bad things, and who will
rescue us? Bill Webster then spoke of ways to learn how to be a Christian, for older people, and young ones too. About Alpha and Messy Church
Sheila Anderson invited one of the Holiday Club volunteers Ann, who talked about her Christian Journey
Time to join in praise and we stood for the hymn 'Lord, I lift you name on high' Marion Mather then led us in Prayers of Response,
Sandra led us into 'We can do good, a well known song from those of us around in the sixties. The offering, which this week was a chance to give money to next year's holiday club, which was followed by a prayer of thanks from John..
We had almost reached the end of our celebration service and John thanked all who participated to make it a success, introducing our last 'Goodbye Alligator'.
Line-up of cast and friends
We all headed for the church hall to enjoy a great barbecue. Looking forward to next years event already. A
great service showing all our congregation how learning about God and
Jesus can be real fun, if somewhat exhausting for the organisers.
