The
temperature outside may have been dropping but the families and
visitors to the hope4Penicuik Christmas Carol event in the town Hall on
Friday 13th received a warm welcome. An audience of over a hundred
children, mums, dads, grandparents as well as members from St. Mungo's
and the other Penicuik churches, or from no church, filled the Cowan
Hall.
Penicuik Silver Band kindly helped out with the
music, a great offer as they are fully booked at this time of year.
Supporting the musical accompaniment was Graham McDonald on
Piano, and son Sam on the Cajon, a type of drum originating from
Peru. The Penicuik Puppets were also there to help explain the Nativity
story.
Joan Cape welcomed everyone and introduced the
evening which began with the Christmas Carol ' O Come all ye faithful, and
'O little town of Bethlehem, led by the Silver Band.
Mo Hayes
presented a reading which we followed with 'In the bleak midwinter, and
'Love came down at Christmas', led by Graham and Sam McDonald.
During the period leading up to this event there had been a Christmas sheep trail. Children with their mum and dads were visiting businesses across Penicuik that were taking
part in the hope4Penicuik Christmas sheep trail, to find one of the knitted woolly sheep hidden somewhere inside each of the
locations. After great deliberation the winners had been identified and prizes were handed out to the jubilant families.
We continued with 'Away in a manger', led by Graham and Sam, followed by 'Silent night' with the Silver Band. Mo Hayes read her second reading
from the bible, after which we sang 'While humble shepherds watched
their flocks' led by the Silver Band.
The
Penicuik Puppets then popped up to tell us about the nativity and the
arrival of baby Jesus. The senior children, with some help, operated
the puppets from behind the screen, and put on a great performance.
Such talented youngsters is great to see. The puppets could not quite
agree
how to explain the story, so called upon us to watch a video clip,
which explained it all.
The Rev Lynsey Downs, rector from
St. James the Less church told us the true meaning of the nativity story, often using song
to from her favourite pop songs to illustrate her story.
The
grand finale had us singing 'We are thankful for the gift of Christ' to
the tune 'We are marching' played by Graham and Sam. All the children
lined up behind Joan and marched up and down the aisle's and around the
audience singing and waving and having a great fun time.
To complete the evening the Silver Band played us out with 'Hark the Herald Angels' .
A
big thanks to all who turned out, the Hope4Penicuik organisers, the
musicians and puppeteers(not forgetting the puppets). It was a great
night for hearing all about Christmas and thoroughly enjoyed by all the
children.
Remember Christmas Messy Church service in St. Mungo's on Sunday 22nd December at 4.00pm when we
welcome our own Holy Family as they travel round Penicuik, and
think about the first Christmas and why it's important. Starts at 4.00pm for 30 minutes.
