Sunday 15 December 2013 |
Finale as the cast take their bow at the and of the Nativity Play
The
Nativity service on Sunday 15th December featured a presentation of the
nativity play, performed by the Sunday School children supported by the
Sunday School teachers and members of the congregation, to form an epic
of which Cecil B DeMille would have been proud, as our minister
Rev Hugh Davidson remarked.
Sunday
School superintendent Agnes Ovenstone narrated the story to the
congregation with the help of some of the other teachers.
We
were introduced first to Joseph, played by church member Gordon
Macdonald, who explained his role as a carpenter and maker of
furniture, door frame, or anything wooden, and how proud he was of
his new chisel, made of finest Damascus steel. Joseph's father, played
by member Jim Forbes was not so enthusiastic about his son's abilities
having to constantly fix his mistakes! Joseph thought his father was on
another 'plane', as he constantly 'hammered on' about it. The humour
continued until the narrator introduced Mary, played by Sunday School
teacher Mary Paterson.
The story moved on as Joseph is about to
marry Mary that night and grabs his multi coloured coat, only to
realise it's the wrong coat in the wrong show!
After
signing 'Love came down at Christmas' we meet Joseph again having asked
for Mary's hand in marriage and been accepted.
After buying items for
their new home Joseph appears sad. An angel, played by Sunday school
teacher Margaret Black, asks Joseph why he is so sad, to which he
replies that Mary is expecting a baby, and that she had been told by angels that her
baby was a gift from God. A second angel played by Charlotte (Charlie)
Sprott also speaks to Joseph and between them the angels clear up the
issue and finally Joseph realises that Mary is indeed going
to give birth to the son of God. |
Charlie, Abbey and Ruby as Angels |
We
sang 'While humble shepherds watched their sheep.' and returned to Mary
and Joseph setting up house. The Roman rulers then decided it was time
for a census count so Joseph and Mary had to make their way to
Bethlehem. All the bookings were made, including donkey hire and
hotel room. They took all the baby things with them as it looked like
the birth would be in Bethlehem.
We
moved to the shepherds, played by members Christine
Jackson, Dorothy Paterson and Norah Cox, tending their sheep. They
noticed a bright star in the sky over Bethlehem. Just then a couple on
a donkey appeared and the shepherds asked them if they were lost. Of
course they were as Joseph had the map upside down and Mary commented
that buying the map from a 'mule cart sale' was a bad idea. The
shepherds showed them the right road after feeding them and warming
them by the fire.
The
three kings, played by Rebecca Robertson (centre), and members
Isabel Donnachie, and Sunday school teacher Joan Traquair, had seen the
bright star also, but like Mary and Joseph were lost. The Shepherds
helped them on to the right road too. After resting Mary and Joseph set
off for Bethlehem.
We sang 'It was on a starry night' as
Mary and Joseph arrived at Bethlehem only to find the hotel full,
following a mixup with their booking. The hotel manager, played by member
Ian Dickson could offer no solution, but the receptionist, played by
member Sheila Haig, thought of the stable, where as we all know baby
Jesus was born.
The
shepherds arrived at the stable, followed by the three kings bearing
gifts which they set before the baby Jesus in the manger.
They were joined by the angels, played by children from the Sunday school.
We concluded the nativity play singing 'Joy to the World' and ended the service with 'Hark the Herald Angels Sing'.
