| | New look for St.
Mungo's Organ |
Much work has taken place on St. Mungo's organ over the past few weeks and viewed from the church looks almost finished.
All
the main pipes are now installed on the front facing pipe rack, though
many of the internal pipes have yet to be re-fitted. The two tier
keyboards are also installed and being re-connected to the tracker
mechanism.
Once all 500 plus pipes are refitted the organ will
be regulated and tuned, after which the full voice will be heard after
many decades of working on reduced notes.
St.
Mungo’s organ fell silent as a major restoration takes
place to repair recent damage and fix outstanding problems that has
reduced the “voice” of the organ over the years. Tthe”Great Organ” was almost
completely removed, with the Swell Organ being all that
remained. (The swell organ hides in a box behind the main
organ. You can see the vertical shutters in the photo
opposite, which open when Eileen presses the
“loud” pedal!)
The plan is to
repair all
the broken parts, in some cases these have been hand
built, and to replace worn items such as felts and leather
activators etc.
Not long now before the organ will fill the church with its new sound.
