Pipe Band leads the parade
Penicuik on Parade on Saturday 30th May started with the horn blowing ceremony for the new Hunter, Colin Hawkins, and Lass Gillian Garriock at the town hall.
Supported by a host of horse riders they headed out on the rideout,
calling first at Penicuik House to be greeted by Sir Robert and Lady
Clerk, then on to the Pentland Hills, returning from House O' Muir
to meet up with Penicuik on Parade.
Led by the Penicuik Pipe
Band the parade passed along the main street, which was lined by
crowds, who gathered under a blue sky and sunshine. The parade was
cheered by families and children, young and old, as it passed on its
way to the park.
Following
the Penicuik pipes there was a loud cheer for the Hunter and Lass and
their band of supporting riders, looking none the worse for their
morning ride over the Pentlands.
They were followed by Penicuik
Athletic football club, displaying their cup from the top deck of the
bus, followed by the young boys and girls dressed in the colours of the
Club, with Penicuik Silver Band providing the music behind them.
Then
came the winning group, the Little miss Penicuik Rainbows, all dressed
in various 'Mister Men' or should that be 'Miss' outfits. Not far
behind were the Beaver Scout group, dressed in a variety of animal
outfits.
More music was approaching in the shape of Glencorse
Pipe Band leading a parade of Army, and Air Cadets. Dance Pointe were
right behind them.
Penicuik Churches Working Together (PCWT) float took the theme of Credit unions and their benefit. Featured
sharks at one end representing the bad side of finance and a beach
party at the other to represent the good guys - credit unions.
Cockenzie
and Port Seton Pipes and Drums followed the PCWT float, leading
more young dance troopers and a 'Save Penicuik Tennis Club' group.
Penicuik Rugby club sported a colourful float, with Peebles Burgh Silver Band providing the musical accompaniment.
The
classic cars followed with a sparkling 1974 MGB and a 1997 Mazda MX5
taking the lead. A Land Rover Discovery G4 Challenge, fresh back
from an off road overland excursion in some foreign country,
preceded a couple of Ford Escort Mk1's dating from the mid 1970's,who
were chased by a gaggle of two wheel bikers on variety of fast
metal.
Peebles Pipe Band completed the parade which wound its
way round to the park, where the horses returned to their horse boxes
in Jackson Street for a well deserved good feed of hay.
The
park hosted a wide range of stalls, with slides, and bouncy castle for
the youngsters. For those looking for a more thrilling ride, the fun
fair offered some thrills without spills on all sorts of flying and
whirling machines.
The fun went on throughout the afternoon under the sunshine, making it a great finalé to Penicuik on Parade.
