Andrew Knox tells us about the work of Penicuik Listeners.

Praise Service Sunday 25 November 2012

Report and photos Jim Paterson

The Praise musicians from Left to Right: Joan Cape (vocals), Andrew Dunsire (guitar and vocals),  Caroline Toms, Neil Cape (guitars), Ian Cape (Percussion), Stephen Elson (guitar and vocals), Sam McDonald (drums), and Graham McDonald (piano).

The monthly praise evening service was held on Sunday 25th. Musicians from the Penicuik churches plus this month a musician more often heard playing for a West End show in London! Ian Cape a percussionist with the orchestra playing in the current Les Miserable show in London joined father Neil on bass guitar, whilst mum Joan led the group and praise evening. Caroline Toms, Stephen Elson, and Andrew Dunsire were on their guitars, Graham McDonald on piano and making sure they all kept to the right beat, Sam McDonald once again kept them all in time on the drums.

A selection of uplifting praise got us in the right mood, including ‘to God be the Glory’. Bless the lord, oh my soul’ and a new one for us ‘El Shaddai’ for which we really needed the projected words on the wall. Joan read from the book of Samuel, before we sang ‘The man who calmed the sea’.

Andrew Knox from the North Church spoke to us about the Listening Service and how the Penicuik Listeners were set up.  This band of volunteers provide a valuable service just listening and reflecting to people going through troubled times. Andrew told us how the volunteers have been through what sounded an onerous, but very thorough series of training courses and events to make sure they meet the high standard required.

A prayer time was followed by the closing praise ‘I the Lord of the sea and sky’ before we all enjoyed refreshments.

There will be no Praise evening at the end of December but the team plan to be back for end January.
