| | Praise Service Sunday 28 October 2012 |
Report and photos Jim Paterson
The
Praise musicians from Left to Right: Andrew Dunsire (guitar and vocals), David
Hunter (drums), Neil Cape (bass guitar), Joan Cape (tambourine and vocals), Stephen Elson (guitar and vocals), and Graham
McDonald (piano).
Following
our morning Communion service led by Fred Harrison and Andrew Dick, and the farewell lunch to thank Fred for his time
supporting us over the past 5 months, we met again for the evening
praise service with a talented gathering of musicians from the
Penicuik Churches.
The
theme for the evening was 'feeding the
hungry', with guest Ewan Gurr telling us about the work of
the Foodbank project and the Trussell Trust. A selection of people
from across the Penicuik churches and beyond came to join and enjoy the
singing and hear about Foodbank.
But first Andrew opened with a prayer
before we joined in praise. with 'Blessed be
your Name, followed by Jesus is the name we honour, then a firm favourite
from past praise evenings ' My Jesus my Saviour' , leading into 'Shout
to the Lord All the Earth, let us sing'. Before Ewan took to the floor
we joined in 'When the music fades, all is stripped away, And I simply
come'.
Ewan
opened with how he has been influenced by Jesus and his healing of the
poor and suffering, plus the 19th century work of the church in
combatting famine through religious and secular organisations,
fundraising to distribute food to the needy.
Foodbank
works in partnership with other established agencies, e.g. social work,
welfare rights, criminal justice CAB, drugs and alchohol services etc,
and very importantly Supermarkets. They also work closely with
communities, relying heavily on volunteers. Foodbanks vision is 'A
Nation Where No One Needs to Go Hungry' . The goal is to have 450
Foodbanks by April 2015. Currently there are 286 across the UK, with 16
in Scotland, 9 already opened and 7 just launched.
Midlothian
has a population of some 82370, of which some 14% are income deprived
which equates to 11531 men, women and children below the poverty line!
David
from Dundee told us how Foodbank had helped him in his hour of
desperation. So much so that he is now helping Foodbank by giving
something back for the help he was given.
The service
concluded with the final song, 'Jesus be the centre, be my source be my
light ', and a closing prayer of thanks from Andrew. We enjoyed
refreshments brought by the organisers and volunteers, giving time for
fellowship and reflection on what we had heard.
Can the
Churches of Penicuik work with other organisations in Midlothian,
to help people finding themselves in desparate situations unable to
find food to eat? As Jesus said "For I was hungry and you fed me, thirsty and
you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in…"
(Matthew 25 verse 35).
