| Prayer and Praise - February 2014 |
Refreshing
our worship of God through prayer and praise, in fellowship with people
in our community, brings new light into our hearts. Bill and
Margaret Webster refreshed our monthly evening services with the
introduction of Prayer and Praise an alternative form of worship, complementing the Sunday @ 7
format.
This second service of Prayer and Praise welcomed a
good number of folks from St. Mungo's and across our community to the
church hall on Sunday 9th of February. Bill Webster opened the
evening by outlining the three themes, the first being 'Worshiping', with Margaret Webster explaining 'Who Jesus is' and 'What he Promises', through readings from John 1 and John 11.
Graham
McDonald then led our singing of the Stuart Townend / Keith
Getty song 'Your the word of God the Father, which you can
hear and see Stuart perform HERE
We followed with the Tim Hughes favourite 'Light of the world' with the
chorus ' Here I am to worship, Here I am to bow down', one of the most
uplifting songs from this talented singer songwriter, who is Director of Worship at Holy Trinity Brompton church in central London. You can see and hear Tim sing the song HERE
Completing
this praise was a variation of 'He is Lord He is Lord', after which we
took time out in groups to pray about the promises God makes to
us.
Returning together we moved on to the second theme 'Asking
for God's help'. by asking 'What's available, how is it
guaranteed, and proof that it's there' Andrew Stoddart read part
of Ephesians 3, what help is available, Isaiah 30, it's guaranteed if
we ask for it, and part of Romans 8, gift of Holy Spirit as proof that
God does help us.
Graham then returned to the piano to lead us singing 'Breathe on me, Breath of God'.
We
returned to our prayer groups to ask for God's help through prayer,
returning for our last theme of the evening, 'Committing
Ourselves.. Jim Paterson read from Matthew 28, what God is asking
us to do, 2 Timothy 1, how we are to do it, and Isaiah 55, why we
know it will work.
Our final praise for the evening started
with the Ian White song 'Focus my eyes on You, O Lord' which you
can hear and see HERE. We followed with the Matt Redman song 'I will offer up my life' which you can hear HERE and 'I,Lord of sea and sky' a version of which you can hear HERE
After the blessing we gathered for tea, refreshments and fellowship.
This
new approach to worship was certainly different and heralded a
refreshing approach, mixing new songs and praise by current singer
songwriters with the more established, dare we say 'traditional' hymns.
Just the type of worship praise we used to experience when we had a
group of praise musicians. Our thanks to those who organised this event for
introducing us to this new form of Sunday evening praise and prayer,
and Graham McDonald for bringing us the new melodies that go with these
new songs.
Life at St. Mungo's does not have to be 'same old'
activities. We have the talent to build something new and exciting. It
just needs our hearts to embrace change, and move on from a perceived
golden past! God will answer if we dare to ask.
