| | Quiz Night - 11 April 2012 |
St. Mungo's hosted the joint churches quiz night on Wednesday 11 April. Sporting no less than nine teams of
varying sizes and skills the group form North, South, St.James, Sacred Heart and St. Mungo's
got together to make for a fun filled evening. St. Mungo's minister
Geoff Berry took the role of questionmaster, while Agnes Ovenstone kept
a tally of the scores.
First off was to think of a team name,
and we ended up with The Merry Bunch, Famous 5, Maginificent 7 (too
many Enid Blyton fans!), The Quads, the Four Jumpers (four old guys
with pullovers of course), Quartet, The Chancers (and so they were),
Seal of Approval, and pushing their boat out Titanic!
With
questions covering a wide range of subjects, everyone was kept on their
toes. The usual headscratching was seen trying to remember which film,
or where was it had happened to be identifed to get the right answer.
The foursome teams were at a disadvantage and much cross
conferring was being carried out, though strictly against the rules!
Of
course no Quiz Night would be complete with out a few bible based
questions and Geoff and Agnes had drawn together a few teasers as well
as head scratchers.
At the halfway point we stopped for a cup
of tea and refreshements. The Magnificent 7 were ahead of Seal of
Approval and Titanic by a small margin of half a point. Would Titanic
speed up and take the lead?
Refuelled and ready for more action
the teams glued their ears back as Geoff piled on the pressure. Amid
great laughter everyone came up with an answer, but not always the
correct one. Anything will do when logic goes out the window!
Unfortunately
Titanic steamed into an iceberg as it had done 100 years ago,and the
cry of women and children first crossed the room. The Seal of Approval
almost took the prize but were pipped at the last couple of questions
which gave the Magnificent 7 from the South Church the "Smart Alec
of the Year" award, the special teddy bear that each years winner
secures until the next quiz night. Everyone agreed it had
been a fun filled evening, the last social gethering with
Geoff at the helm, before he heads of to pastures new as an Army
Chaplain. Perhaps we could have done with a few young recruits on our
team to boost our score.
A
big thank you to all who came along and made up the teams. It is
really good to have all the churches in Penicuik involved, making for
friendship and companionship across Gods' community.
