| St. Mungo's - Who we are and what we do |
During the morning service informal time on Sunday 8 March 2020, the Rev John Urquhart and Session Clerk Neil Cape introduced a range of
helpful guide cards that are available to the congregation.
Large
posters in the hall promote the cards, raising an awareness to everyone
who spots them, a starter point for discussion.
Who we are?
What do we do? Midweek activities? Friends of St. Mungo's.
Neil
explained what each card covers, and how they can be used in
conversation. As John summarised, they are a conversation starter.
Who we are? We
are a friendly community of Christians and people seeking faith in God,
one of several church congregations in Penicuik. We believe our purpose
is to follow Jesus and grow in our understanding of God’s love,
showing love to each other and to the people around us by what we do
and say.
St Mungo’s Church of Scotland is situated at
the foot of Kirkhill. We have our main service of worship on a Sunday
morning at 11am.
At our Sunday service we meet to worship God,
and to hear what the Bible has to say to us. We sing accompanied by the
organ or piano, using a mix of traditional and modern material.
Volunteers read from the Bible and the minister gives a talk on it in
language that is easy to understand. You don’t have to have faith
or sign up to anything to come along. You can explore what Christians
do and believe and take things at your own pace. After morning worship,
we serve refreshments in the hall, and you are welcome to join us and
get to know a few people.
Both the church building and the hall
(across Kirkhill Road) are easily accessible by wheelchairs and
buggies. We project the words of songs (although hymn books or printed
words are also available), and videos are often used as part of the
service. We record the service, so you can listen again on our website (www.stmungos.freeuk.com).
The
website has recent copies of our monthly newsletter, and more
information about our activities; details are available on the cards
‘What we do’ and ‘Mid-week activities’.
Our minister is Rev John Urquhart, who can be contacted on 01968 382116

What we do
Sunday worship We
are a congregation of the Church of Scotland, and meet at 11am every
Sunday in the church, to worship God together. The service is fairly
traditional in style, but with a message relevant for today.
You’ll be made very welcome, and we’d love to meet you
afterwards for tea or coffee in the church hall. See the card ‘Who we are’ for more details.
Time for prayer We
meet in the church vestry between 10 and 10.45am on a Sunday morning,
to pray for the work of the church, for people in need, and for the
people who have put their prayer requests in the prayer boxes in town
(one in the library, one in Tesco). All are welcome to participate. We
also support the ‘Try Praying’ initiative (www.trypraying.co.uk).
Newsletter The
‘Mungo Messenger’ is distributed to members, to Friends of
St Mungo’s and is freely available online (see below).
Mid-week meetings There
are several groups that meet during the week for Bible study and/or
fellowship. Our halls are also used by community groups, from Rainbows
to dancing, and host a food bank on Mondays and Fridays. Details are
available on the card ‘Mid-week activities’.
Messy Church For
families with primary-school age children, Messy Church is an afternoon
of activities, celebration and a hot dinner. Staffed by people from
several Penicuik churches, we meet in St. Mungo’s Hall on the
last Sunday of each month, 4 to 6 pm.
Alpha courses We
regularly run these courses jointly with other Penicuik churches, for
people to find out more about Christianity, whether they have never
been to church, or have been coming to church for decades. Look out for
details of the next course. How do I find out more? www.stmungos.freeuk.com, also on Facebook

Friends of St. Mungo's
What is Friends of St Mungo’s ? St
Mungo’s is the old Parish Church for Penicuik, and the original
foundation dates back many centuries. Also known as St
Kentigern’s (the same saint – Kentigern was his formal
name), the old church, tower and graveyard lie behind the present
church building, and are maintained by Midlothian Council. The church
building dates from 1880, when the ‘new’ building of 1771
was enlarged to meet the growing population of the town. Over the
years, many people have been connected with the church, through family
occasions such as baptisms, weddings or funerals, and as members. The
people of Penicuik recognise the building, part of the Conservation
Area in the centre of town, as a key part of our heritage.
For
those who are no longer active church members, or for anyone who would
like to have a formal link to St Mungo’s, we offer membership of
the Friends of St Mungo’s, which provides news of what is
happening in the church, and an opportunity to share in what we do.
This is a new venture, and we welcome ideas for its development.
