Report and photos - Jim Paterson
The sun shone down on the annual summer fair at St.
Mungo's on Saturday 27th June, and attracted many members and visitors
to browse the stalls. A wide range of items from gift cards, books,
home baking of every sort, and an amazing choice of drinks to wash it
all down with. Tombola and raffle put a bit of spice into the morning,
and the strawberry tea included in the ticket price was the icing on
the cake, as they say.
Mary Paterson was looking after the bottle stall, her favourite place during the summer fair's, with
help from Barbara Sprott, encouraging a little flutter at three tickets
for a pound to try and win one of the interesting selection of drinks
on display.
This year granddaughter Abby was also on hand to help. All the way from
Melbourne Australia I asked if it felt different being on the other
side of the world. Not at all, as she told me that she has been to
Penicuik to visit her granny several times before.
Heather
Boyle had been busy making a huge selection of cards, with something
for all occasions. Always on the lookout for new ideas Heather
brought along a range of 3D cards that really 'stood out'. Be it
birthday or any special occasion, Heather has a selection of cards to
meet your every need.
Home baking with Trish and Joyce Hunter
pointing out the choices, is always a big attraction. A quick look soon
had me heading for one of my favourites. I was too late to bag a tea
loaf, but the
carrot cake will go down very nicely thank you. All sorts of cup cakes,
biscuits and loafs were on sale, some of which could be sampled with
the strawberry tea. Try before you buy was a good idea.
Before that there was still the toy store. Margaret
Black and Agnes Ovenstone had presented an abundance of toys for boys
and girls, from soft toys to make friends with and cuddle up to, to
real boys cars and garages to have fun with. Looked like the pair were
in their second childhood on the pretence they were just
rearranging the display!
Linn Kinloch and Carole
Lough were on the tombola stall, while Helen Sutherland made sure there
were plenty interesting books to browse through.
If you hadn't
noticed on the way in you could not help but spot the Raffle ticket
stall on the way to the strawberry tea, which enticed many of the
visitors with a great selection of prizes on display. A special
selection of prizes were only available to purchasers of pink or blue
tickets, so getting your ticket colour correct was the first thing to
remember.
Most
people managed to win a prize, with your story author securing a
selection of cookies. Along with my carrot cake it seems my morning
coffee, and afternoon tea breaks are covered for the coming week.
Gordon
Macdonald bagged the biggest box of chocolates I've seen for a while.
Watch those calories Gordon! Just as well he is a keen golfer, need a
few good walks to balance that box full of goodies.
The
big prize of nursery rhyme diorama of Ba Ba Black sheep was won by Abby
Paterson. Well deserved too. Brother Ethan was waiting patiently for
his ticket to come up but eventually the one he was holding was called.
A
great morning was had by all and a big thanks to the social team for
setting it all up and the serving ladies, Barbara Ramsay, Norah Cox,
Christine Jackson and Margaret Barry for keeping our cups filled
as we enjoyed our strawberry tea.

A
total of just over £541 was made on the day for St.
Mungo's funds. Thanks to everyone who turned out to support their
church.
