| Thinking Day - 19 February 2013 |
St.
Mungos’ was delighted to host the 2013 Thinking Day service for
the Girl Guides, Brownies and Rainbows, on Tuesday 19th February. The
gallery was full of parents and grandparents there to see and support
their children.
Thinking Day goes back to 1926, when delegates
from around the globe met at the fourth World Conference of the
Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting Movement. There they decided that 22
February would be known from then onward as a special day for Girl
Guides and Girl Scouts all over the world, when they would think of
each other and express their thanks and appreciation for their
international Movement.
The 22nd February was chosen as the
date for Thinking Day because it was the birthday of both Lord
Baden-Powell, founder of the Boy Scout Movement, and his wife Olave,
who was World Chief Guide. For 2013 the date in for the Midlothian
movement was chosen as the 19th for ease of bringing all the
companies together.
Guide
Commissioner Linda McDonald started the service which had the
Guides, and Brownies presenting their colours and pennants, followed by
the girls singing their theme song ‘One more Step along the
World I Go’, by Sydney Carter illustrates life as a journey,
calling upon God to be our companion and guide. This was followed by
the gospel children's song ‘This little Guiding light of
mine’.
We
were told about the elements of the Guide Flag and what each part
means, before singing part of the Scout song ‘Make new friends
but keep the old’. We also heard of the guide movement in Mexico,
India, Switzerland and Great Britain. The Rainbows, Brownies and Guides
then renewed their Promises, each promising to Love their God, to be
kind and helpful, and uphold the Guide Law, finishing with the song
‘On my honour I will try’.
The
service finished with the National Anthem and the song ‘Flags
flying high’. A great way for the Guide movement to celebrate,
and one that we hope they will celebrate again in St. Mungo’s
next year.
