Soldiers
returning from Afghanistan were given a royal welcome homecoming as
they paraded through the streets Penicuik
The
streets were lined with the people of Penicuik and children from the
local schools to welcome The Royal Highland Fusiliers 2nd Battalion of
the Royal Regiment of Scotland (2 SCOTS) after six months of intense
and dangerous operations in Afghanistan’s Helmand Province. Helping them along was the Battalion Mascot Baxter Bear. You can read more about his visit to St. Mungo's [here]
Some
200 soldiers received the Afghanistan Campaign Medal from HRH Prince
Andrew at a ceremony in Glencorse Barracks, before marching through
Penicuik, where HRH Prince Andrew took the Salute outside of Penicuik
town hall.
At a private ceremony, the duke also
presented 10 members of the battalion with long service, good conduct
medals and the accumulated campaign service medal in Penicuik town hall
after the homecoming parade.
The medals are awarded
to soldiers who have completed more than 15 years' unblemished service.
2
Scots carried out patrols, operations and fought insurgents in the
Lashkar Gah region of Helmand province.
About 500
members of the battalion also helped to provide security in the area as
well as training the Afghan National Security Forces.
Their
positions have been taken over by The Highlanders, 4th Battalion, The
Royal Regiment of Scotland (4 SCOTS).
We thanked God in our prayers that no members of
the battalion were killed during the six-month tour.
